With the aim of creating a gentler, more welcoming, and positive environment for patients during treatment, Edutrain has been guiding students in developing a library and relaxation corner at the Palliative Care Department of Military Hospital 175.
The program is designed to create a small yet warm and comforting space where patients can read books, play board games, listen to music, or take part in simple handicraft activities during their treatment journey. In addition to supporting patients, the space also offers medical staff a place to take a short break and unwind after demanding working hours.
Under Edutrain’s guidance, students work together to prepare and organize activities suitable for a palliative care environment, including a mini library, chess, Chinese chess, knitting and crochet activities, guitar, and other light recreational options. Each activity is selected with accessibility, comfort, and human connection in mind.
The library corner includes a variety of books ranging from health and personal development to literature and light reading. The chess area and music corner provide additional options for patients and their families while waiting or resting. Activities such as knitting and crochet also offer participants a gentle way to focus their attention, enjoy a sense of accomplishment, and experience moments of calm during treatment.
A book, a chess game, a few minutes of music, or a small handmade item can become a meaningful moment in someone’s day. These activities are not intended to replace medical care or treatment, but rather to provide emotional and recreational support, contributing to a more comfortable and welcoming environment for patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
For the participating students, the program is more than a community service activity. It is also a meaningful experiential learning opportunity. Students are involved in observing the space, understanding users’ needs, developing ideas, preparing materials, and arranging the different areas. Through this process, they have the opportunity to strengthen teamwork, responsibility, organizational skills, and, most importantly, the ability to listen to and understand the needs of others.
One distinctive aspect of the program is that students do not simply donate or bring materials to the hospital. They are encouraged to think carefully about how a space can influence emotions and well-being. Choosing appropriate books, deciding where to place a chess table, arranging seating, or creating a welcoming atmosphere helps students understand that community impact can often begin with thoughtful and simple details.
Through this initiative, Edutrain hopes to encourage students to become more actively involved in meaningful community projects, where they can contribute not only their time but also their creativity, observation skills, and ability to work collaboratively to create practical value for others.
Edutrain believes that education does not take place only in the classroom. Real-world experiences such as this program at the Palliative Care Department of Military Hospital 175 can help students develop a deeper understanding of compassion, social responsibility, and the value of using their knowledge and skills to serve the community.
From a bookshelf, a chessboard, a guitar, or simply a quiet place to sit, the program hopes to bring moments of relaxation, connection, and warmth to patients, their families, and healthcare professionals.
A small space may not change the entire treatment journey, but it can make one part of that journey feel a little lighter.
